Greetings from Santa Fe! My name is Ruby Reyes Tapia, and I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you. This fall, I will be embarking on a new chapter of my life as I begin my higher education journey at the Anglo-American University in Prague, Czech Republic. As I prepare for this incredible adventure, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my experiences and express my deepest gratitude for the pivotal role Girls Inc. of Santa Fe has played in shaping my path.

Growing up in a single-parent household, financial challenges were a constant companion. The thought of studying outside of New Mexico seemed like a far-fetched dream. But thanks to the unwavering support of Girls Inc., that dream is now becoming a reality.

Girls Inc. has been a cornerstone in my life, providing me with opportunities that have fueled my growth and development. As a member of the Teen Leadership Council, I found my voice and learned the importance of advocacy. Participating in the Candidate Forum and speaking at the State of the Future panel discussion were experiences that built my confidence and prepared me for the world beyond Santa Fe.

One of the most impactful experiences was earning a NOLS scholarship through Girls Inc. The backpacking expedition in the Pacific Northwest that I completed at age 16 was a transformative journey. I faced challenges head-on, like completing a 12-mile hike that took 12 hours and learning to work cohesively with a diverse group of peers. This adventure taught me resilience, teamwork, and the value of taking safe risks. It was during this time that I realized, “I can make strong connections with people in a short amount of time, and I’m okay with being out of my comfort zone.”

Now, as I look forward to studying political science in a city rich with history and culture, I am filled with excitement and gratitude. The $20,000 scholarship from Girls Inc. National has made this incredible opportunity possible by covering three years of tuition. I am eager to explore the beautiful architecture of Prague, immerse myself in a diverse community of students, and learn from professors who are experts in their fields. This journey will allow me to broaden my horizons, gain new perspectives, and bring back valuable knowledge to serve my community in Santa Fe.

This journey is a testament to the power of belief and support. Girls Inc. of Santa Fe has been instrumental in helping me break barriers and achieve what once seemed impossible. Your generous contributions have made this possible, and I cannot thank you enough.
