Doris Page: A Journey of Science, Service, and Advocacy
Doris Page’s journey began in the city of Newark, New Jersey, where her early years were marked by an inquisitive mind and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Growing up in the heart of Newark, she developed a passion for exploration, nurtured by frequent visits to the public libraries in her local area and downtown. It was among the shelves containing Nancy Drew mysteries and fairy tales that Doris’s love for stories and learning took root.
Her interest in the sciences emerged early on. An adventurous spirit led her to dissect her first frog, carefully crafting a skeleton that she proudly presented to her mother in a cigar box. Although her mother was less than thrilled with the unconventional gift, Doris’s passion for biology remained undeterred. She continued to explore the mysteries of life, and how things worked by a curiosity that would shape her future.
Doris’s academic journey gained momentum in high school, where she joined the Future Teachers of America (FTA), reflecting her commitment to both education and science. Her dedication earned her a scholarship to Montclair State College (now Montclair University), where she majored in Science Education. This solid foundation propelled her into a career that combined her love for science with a passion for teaching.
Her professional path began in Moorestown, New Jersey, where she taught high school biology. Later, the call of higher education took her to the University of Colorado in Boulder, where she earned a master’s degree in environmental, Population, and Organismic Biology. Doris’s pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; she went on to attend medical school at the University of Colorado, earning her medical degree and further honing her skills with additional training in Denver.
Doris served as a General Medical OXicer in the U.S. Army and later in the U.S. Army Reserves, showcasing her dedication to service. After completing her internship, she chose the path of private practice, establishing a clinic in Denver that oXered comprehensive family medicine care. Her career continued to flourish when she relocated to Tacoma, Washington, where she practiced clinical family medicine for over two decades.
In 2011, Doris’s journey brought her to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although she retired from full-time practice, her passion for medicine and service remained strong. She continued to contribute to the community by working at a nonprofit clinic in Santa Fe until her second retirement in 2015.
Even in retirement, Doris’s commitment to advocacy and social justice endured. She became actively involved with the Santa Fe NAACP, holding several leadership positions and championing healthcare access for all New Mexicans. Her advocacy work was complemented by her lifelong passions for photography, fine dining, and travel, which enriched her life and broadened her horizons.
More recently, Doris has become passionately involved with Girls Inc. of Santa Fe, where she now serves as a board member. She is eagerly looking forward to learning, participating, and sharing her life experiences and expertise with this incredible organization.
